A church service held at Savannah United Church on Sunday ushered in Child Month which is being marked by events throughout May.

“In the Cayman Islands, the Department of Children and Family Services carry an immense responsibility of safeguarding of our youngest citizens, yet… I am reminded that this task is not one that be shouldered by the government only or the department alone,” said Rayle Roberts, acting director of DCFS, at the service.

“It requires a collective effort and a commitment from every member of the community.”

Rayle Roberts addressing those gathered at Sunday’s church service to launch Child Month.

“Our children need us… they’re not only the future leaders of our society but also the bearers of hope and promise in a world and an island that often seem filled with challenges,” Roberts said.

Roberts challenged attendees to “make a difference in the lives of our children, not just your children, but our children. Whether it’s by volunteering your time, advocating for their rights or the lost art of just simply offering a listening ear. Your actions have the power to create lasting change.”

The service also included prayers, scripture readings, a sermon and songs of praise and worship.

More than 20 events and activities are planned, under the theme ‘Moving from Challenge to Change’, including youth games nights, family fun days, workshops at various primary schools, musical story time in Cayman Brac, and the annual Circle of Love Breakfast.
