Police have detained two men following the discovery of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in a vehicle on Saturday morning.

In a statement on Sunday morning, police said that while conducting targeted patrols in the George Town area on Friday night, officers observed the movements of a silver Honda Fit.

Officers located the vehicle on Halpine Road, George Town shortly after 2am on Saturday and conducted a search of the vehicle.

A firearm and ammunition in an extended magazine were retrieved from the vehicle, police said.

A 24-year-old George Town man was arrested and detained for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Later on Saturday, around 10pm, officers executed a search at a residential address in George Town, and a second man, a 39-year-old of George Town, was arrested by police on similar charges.

He has been held at the detention center.

Police said the vehicle, firearm and ammunition have been seized for forensic analysis.

Investigations are continuing.
