National flag carrier Cayman Airways has been voted among the top 15 international airlines in the world by Travel + Leisure magazine’s 2024 ‘World’s Best Awards’.

Cayman Airways earned the 13th spot on the list, with a reader score of 83.33, beating Asiana Airlines and Air Tahiti Nui.

It was the only airline in the Western Hemisphere to secure a top-15 spot in the ‘Best International Airlines in 2024’ category of the awards, a Cayman Airways statement noted.

Singapore Airlines topped the list, released on Wednesday.

The Cayman Islands was also ranked among the 25 favourite islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Bahamas in the awards, earning the 17th spot. Dominica was named the overall winner in that category.

More than 186,000 Travel + Leisure readers completed the 2024 survey.

Airlines were rated on criteria that included cabin comfort, in-flight service, customer service and value.

Tourism and Ports Minister Kenneth Bryan, in the Cayman Airways statement, lauded what he described as “an incredible distinction” for the national airline.

“Ranking so favourably among some of the biggest international airlines is a true validation of our national airline’s quality and consistency. As the Minister for Tourism and Ports, I am very proud of Cayman Airways for continuing to elevate and enhance the traveler experience,” he said.

The minister paid tribute to the airline’s management and board of directors, staff and crew members for their “stellar efforts in earning this well-deserved, world-class recognition”.

Last week, under the threat of Hurricane Beryl, Cayman Airways staffers showed off their capabilities and executed a record 24 evacuation flights before the storm’s arrival.

‘Proud moment’

Cayman Airways President and CEO Fabian Whorms noted in the statement that Travel + Leisure magazine is a world-leading travel media publication with more than 15 million monthly readers.

“This ranking highlights the quality and value of Cayman Airways’ service compared to the hundreds of airlines around the world, and although there was a separate award category for U.S.-based airlines, the score received by Cayman Airways also surpassed the scores achieved by every major U.S.-based airline in their award category,” he said.

He said the level of achievement attained by the airline is “a true testament” to the dedication of the staff, and “reflects the pride, hospitality, and continuous pursuit of excellence for which Cayman Airways and the Cayman Islands are well known.”

Chairman of the Cayman Airways Board of Directors John-Paul Clarke added that the board has placed significant emphasis on enhancing the customer experience and fostering employee engagement.

“This recognition from Travel + Leisure readers is greatly appreciated and highlights the remarkable accomplishments of our board of directors, management team, and our 350 dedicated employees,” Clarke said.

Paul Tibbetts, the airline’s chief financial officer, said the accolade highlighting Cayman Airways as one of the world’s top international airlines “speaks volumes about our operational excellence and our team’s heartfelt approach to service”.
