The Cayman National Cultural Foundation is hosting ‘Echoes of a Legend: A Tribute to Dave Martins’ in honour of the cultural icon who died last month at age 90.
“Join us as we celebrate the incredible life and legacy of Dave Martins, a towering figure in the Caribbean and a visionary leader whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the Cayman Islands, and the region,” CNCF said in an email Monday, announcing the 8 Sept. event.

“Best known as leader of the renowned Tradewinds band, Dave Martins also played a pivotal role in shaping the artistic landscape of the Cayman Islands,” the foundation said. “He initiated and produced the Batabano carnival in collaboration with Rotary, designed the national arts festival Cayfest, and created the beloved satirical revue Rundown alongside CNCF Artistic Director Henry Muttoo.”
Lorna Reid, CNCF chairperson, told the Cayman Compass, “A Caribbean cultural icon, Dave Martins’ loss is felt not only in Canada, Guyana and the Cayman Islands but throughout the entire region, where his legacy will live on in his music, his writings, and the many cultural institutions he helped build.
“It is a privilege for CNCF to bring together Dave’s friends and colleagues for this Tribute Concert, and to celebrate the wide breadth of his creativity.”
The event at the Harquail Theatre, which will feature ‘special guests’, will start at 3pm, with doors opening at 2pm.
