Firefighters responded to a fire at the old multi-purpose school hall at St. Ignatius Catholic School on Walkers Road on Thursday evening.

The Cayman Compass was told smoke was spotted on the roof of the old school hall shortly before 6pm Thursday and the fire service was alerted.
Cayman’s 911 operators confirmed that eight individuals had to be evacuated from the Loyola Hall.
There were no reports of injuries.
The Compass was on the scene as firemen responded to the report.
There are no visible flames at the moment at the building and the fire appears to be under control.
The origin of the fire is unknown at this time.
The Compass understands St Ignatius Principal Peter Embleton issued a notice to parents Thursday night advising that the school will be closed on Friday in the interest of student and faculty safety.
He indicated that the fire appeared to be limited to the roof of the Loyola Hall, but the Fire Service is likely to return to conduct further investigations into the blaze on Friday.
He said at the time of the fire there were no school or parish activities taking place.
The RCIPS, responding to Compass queries Thursday evening, stated that emergency services, including police, fire and EMS, remain on the scene at the location on Walkers Road attending to the fire.
Road diversions were in place at Walkers Road and Denham Thomas Road, as well as Walkers Road and Academy Road.

The RCIPS said those diversions have been lifted.
At least four fire engines responded to the scene, including appliances from the George Town fire headquarters.
Assessment of the damage is ongoing.
