Nearly two dozen people from Cayman Brac participated in a World Rugby level 1 certified course, held on Saturday, 21 Sept., to support the development of the sport in the Sister Islands.
The course, held at Layman E. Scott High School and organised by Cayman Rugby and the Sister Islands Sports Association, featured 21 participants, ages 14-50, with all but two marking the first time they had ever played contact rugby.
“It was inspiring to see how enthused everyone was, how they embraced the challenges, engaged in questions and activities, and demonstrated the rugby values throughout the whole day,” Mercedes Foy, women’s rugby manager said.
The course featured teaching the principals of play and game-based coaching, which was all put into practice on the day. The Brackers also focused on the key factors of how to tackle and be tackled with the emphasis on safety.
For Foy, the opportunity to train and teach Cayman Brac students rugby will translate well into future school competition which she noted will include Layman Scott.
“Tag rugby will be delivered at primary and secondary schools in Cayman Brac over the coming weeks,” she said. “This is to help prepare students to travel to the Cayman Rugby Inter-School Tag Tournament.”
That event will be held in November at the South Sound Rugby Club.
Additionally, those who took part in the World Rugby level 1 certified course will now have to complete a theory examination online.
