Although the South Sound rugby pitch will be quiet for the remainder of September due to maintenance, training and recruiting for the women’s programme have been heating up at Seven Mile Public Beach.

The first session featured players of all ages training under the morning sun and welcomed 16 newcomers, according to Mercedes Foy, Cayman Rugby Club women’s rugby manager.

“[I’m] really happy with the first week of our girls’ and women’s beach rugby block,” Foy told the Compass.

“[We have] nine new women’s players [and] seven new girls’ players. They showed great bravery showing up and trying a new sport. They all had fun, worked hard and made new connections.”

The sessions are part of an ongoing mission to elevate women’s rugby locally and Foy has been at the heart of that since 2021, hosting many camps and relaunching the league.

She previously brought in overseas star players like Shaunagh Brown to inspire the local squad, returned Cayman to international competition and under her watch a Caymanian player was featured on a World Rugby documentary.

Foy added that the sessions will continue every Saturday for the remainder of the month, and hopes more people will join either to pursue the sport competitively or just to get fit.

“We are welcoming everyone to join us this Saturday; no experience necessary,” she said, noting that it’s an empowering group where people can meet new friends.

The training will be held on 14 Sept. at Seven Mile Public Beach from 8-9:15am for women aged 17 and over, with girls 11-18 invited to join the 9:30-11am session.
