The Chamber of Commerce has named six Caymanians as its VoTech Stars for 2024.

Alyssa West, Joey Bodden, Meshach Taylor, Perry Smith Jr, Trenton Foreman and William Belfond were all honoured at an awards ceremony, held on Thursday at the Compass Loft, for their achievements in the workplace.

The chamber launched the VoTech Stars initiative in 2022, in partnership with Inspire Cayman, Foster’s, and Health City Cayman Islands, to promote and celebrate Caymanians who excel in vocational and technical fields.

The scheme aims to attract more Caymanians to pursue careers in those fields and increase awareness about the wide range of opportunities available. The 2024 award recipients work for a variety of employers including Department of Environmental Health, Cayman Water Authority, Foster’s and the Cayman Spirits Company.

“Working in non-traditional careers, these individuals make indispensable contributions to our economy, often in ways that go unnoticed,” said Wil Pineau, Chamber of Commerce chief executive, at the awards ceremony last week.

“This evening, we spotlight their unique and invaluable contributions, acknowledging that their efforts are as crucial to our community as those in more visible fields.”

Chamber president Joanne Lawson stressed the importance of the programme’s role in increasing job opportunities and asked the VoTech award recipients to “share the lessons you’ve learned” to inspire others.

The winners were presented with their awards by Lawson and Wesley Howell, chief officer of the Ministry of Labour and Border Control.
