The National Weather Service has issued a severe weather alert ahead of the possible formation of a tropical depression in the southwest Caribbean, which is projected to impact the Cayman Islands with heavy rain and wind.
In a alert on Saturday evening, the NWS said it continues to closely monitor an area that has been identified as AL97, which is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.
“Current weather models suggest that a tropical cyclone could form within the next 72 hours, with the potential to strengthen gradually. Given this, we are issuing a severe weather alert. A severe weather conditions are likely to affect the Cayman Islands early next week,” Kerry Powery, NWS Chief Meteorologist, said in an audio message on the impeding weather conditions.
“Significant” rainfall is anticipated across the Cayman Islands starting Monday through to Friday, the alert stated.

The most substantial rainfall is forecasted for Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Miami-based Hurricane Center has given the system an 80% chance of formation through the next 7 days.
“Due to the potential development of a tropical cyclone that could affect the Cayman Islands within the next 72 hours, our team at the Cayman Islands National Weather Service has issued a Severe Weather Alert at this time to allow the public to begin any necessary preparations. The community’s safety is our number one priority,” Powery said.
He said there remains some uncertainty regarding the location of development, as well as the timing.
“However, environmental conditions are favourable for gradual development thereafter with the potential of a tropical depression forming,” he said.
Grand Cayman is expected to receive an average of 1.7 to 3 inches of rain, with the potential for peaks as high as 4.7 inches, while the Sister Islands might see average accumulations ranging from 2.6 to 5.3 inches, reaching up to 8.3 inches in some areas, the alert stated.
A flood warning will be in effect for the Cayman Islands on Tuesday, 5 Nov. and Wednesday, 6 Nov. due to expected heavy rainfall.
“Along with this, a small craft advisory is already active, and a stronger marine warning may be issued for these days as well. All boats should stay in safe harbour starting Monday evening,” Powery said.
Wind speeds from Monday thru Friday are expected to be around 15 to 20 knots, with the possibility of higher gusts.
“Additionally, there’s a chance of tropical storm force winds hitting the Sister Islands on Tuesday,” Powery added.
Powery urged the community to “stay safe and make all necessary preparations”.
