Former port director and career public servant Errol Bush will be laid to rest on Saturday, 11 Jan., his family has confirmed.

Mr. Bush, 85, died peacefully at his home on 23 Dec.

His funeral service will be held at 2:30pm at the Cayman Islands Baptist Church, 163 Pedro Castle Rd., Savannah.

He was well known and loved within the Cayman Islands community and was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1990 for his contribution to the islands’ development.

‘Remarkable public servant’

Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, in a brief comment to the Cayman Compass, said his passing represents the “loss of a remarkable public servant”.

Errol Bush made an impact wherever he went, the deputy governor noted.

“During his tenure as port director, his strong leadership and unwavering dedication to excellence laid the foundation for our modern port system. His deep love for country and sterling character were evident in everything he did. Though he retired many years ago, his legacy continues to benefit our islands, and he will be deeply missed,” Manderson added.

Errol Bush served as port director for 15 years.

Mr. Bush joined the Port Authority in 1979 as deputy port director of finance and became port director in 1986, a role he served in for 15 years before demitting office in December 2001.

He was named chairman of the Port Authority Board under the Progressives-led government in August 2013.

He was reappointed to the board in November 2017 and retired in 2019, having overseen many changes at the Port Authority, from implementing a computer system covering all aspects of the port’s operations, which integrated the tracking of containers, placement of cargo, warehouse management and financials, to buying property to store containers in the Industrial Park area.

He was also on hand for the development of the north and south cruise terminals, opening of the Port Authority’s purpose-built facilities and the opening of the Berkley Bush Cargo Distribution Centre in the Airport Industrial Park.

Apart from his work at the port, Mr. Bush served as a trustee of the Silver Thatch Pensions Plan and served on numerous public committees and boards, including the National Roads Authority, the Port Authority, Cayman Airways and Caribbean Utilities Company.

He was also a strong family man.

The father of five will be interred at the Garden of Reflections at Prospect Point.

The family said a bus service will be available for those attending the interment.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years Nancy Bush née Fleming, his five children and 10 grandchildren.

The funeral service will be live streamed on the Cayman Islands Baptist Church YouTube and Facebook pages.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Bush’s memory be made to the Cayman Heart Fund or the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.
