Traffic disruption is expected for central George Town for the next week due to a road closure for essential works, as the George Town revitalisation project reaches its final stages.
Edward Street by the junction with Cardinall Avenue closed at 6pm on Wednesday and will remain closed until 6am on Wednesday, 5 Feb. for essential works.
Local access will be permitted at the junction of Shedden Road and Edward Street, and two-way traffic has now resumed on Main Street, which runs between Shedden Road and Edward Street.
Public thanked
The Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport and Development (PAHITD) and the George Town Revitalisation Initiative (GTRI) thanked the public for its “patience and unwavering support” during the work, which has been going on for several years.
The GTRI is a multi-year government project led by the ministry, designed to breathe life and vibrancy back to Cayman’s capital. It was initially expected to be completed by autumn 2022 but was hit by supply chain issues such as the scarcity and cost of construction materials.

How can the PAHITD refer to the “patience and unwavering support” of the public in relation to the George Town Revitalisation Initiative?. Designed to bring “life and vibrancy to the capital”, for more than 3 years so far it has rather brought chaos and confusion along with traffic delays and it is still not finished. There seems to be an obsession with coloured bricks which will in parts become part of the road surface for traffic, a strange idea as they will soon become discoloured.
