The Cayman Islands Astronomical Society will be giving young stargazers priority when it holds its next ‘Planet Parade’ viewing on Saturday, 15 Feb.
Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are aligning in the night sky this month. While those bright planets are clearly visible to the naked eye, Saturday’s event will give youngsters a chance to get a much closer view of them through the Astronomical Society’s powerful telescopes.
The organisation, which holds public viewings of celestial events and invites people to observe planets and constellations through its telescopes, will be at the walking track of the Truman Bodden Sports Complex from 6:30pm.
This will be the second ‘Planet Parade’ viewing this month. The first was held on 1 Feb.
Tiyen Miller of the Astronomical Society said more than 400 people showed up for that event, and because the crowd was so big, many children and families were left disappointed because they did not get a turn on the telescopes.
So, for this Saturday’s viewing, the young astronomy fans in the community will be the first to use them, he said.
“This time kids have absolute priority,” Miller said. “If there’s any kids in line, parents need to wait.”
The event will be cancelled if there is more than 50% cloud cover. For more information, visit the Cayman Islands Astronomical Society’s Facebook page.
