The Cayman Islands Astronomical Society will host an evening of stargazing on the oceanfront at Sunset House on Friday, 20 March.

Tiyen Miller, of the astronomical society, said, “You will see a beautiful thin crescent moon and brilliant Venus follow the sun into the ocean, as well as the colossal planet Jupiter overhead with its bright moons and striped atmosphere.”

Miller said there will also be a “bonus flyby” at 8:35pm of the Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits about 300 miles above Earth, at a speed of 17,000 miles per hour.

Attendees will also be given a chance to learn about the processes of how stars are formed and how they evolve, as they view the Orion Nebula through the astronomical society’s telescopes.

“Children will have absolute priority for telescope viewing for the first half hour, in order to ensure that your youngest astronomers have an awesome time,” Miller said.

All are welcome to the free event, which begins at 7pm.

The viewing will be cancelled if there is over 50% cloud cover, so anyone planning on attending the event is advised to check the organiser’s Facebook page for the latest updates.
