50 years ago: Agricultural Show; ‘scare’ on Brac flight

The front page of the 13 Feb. 1975 edition of The Caymanian Compass declared. ‘Agricultural Show “Not As Good” ’. Apparently, “many people” were of that opinion, according to the story, which noted there was “no Farm Queen contest, no floats, no tug of war, and the number of exhibits dropped sharply from last year”. However, the products on display were of “extremely high quality … and must have broken several records”. In the accompanying photo, Kenneth Clarke was showing his prize-winning cassava to Warren Conolly, Executive Council member for agriculture.

Passengers on a Cayman Airways DC-3 flight from Cayman Brac to Grand Cayman experienced a “scare” when the plane started leaking oil and was forced to return to the Brac. A chartered plane brought engineers in to repair the aircraft. The article said that some of the passengers travelled to Grand Cayman by a private Beechcraft, while others attempted to make the trip on a Piper. However, the Piper’s instruments “appeared to be faulty” and the plane “missed” Grand Cayman. After the passengers experienced some “very anxious moments”, Little Cayman was located and the plane landed with fuel very low. Eventually, the Piper took them to the Brac where they wound up on the now-repaired DC-3 and made it to Grand Cayman.

The editorial focused on the ‘golden opportunity’ that education authorities were providing through counselling and careers offices. It noted that counselling develops better citizens and “inevitably enhance good discipline in the life of the school”, while career guidance “channelled in the right direction is bound to create the correct type of work climate”.

Finally, a photo showed students boarding a bus after watching ‘Great Expectations’. Cinema director Julian Rifkin said the children’s “neatness and courtesy was a great tribute to the Island”.
