The Cayman Islands Humane Society will hold its annual 5K Walk and Wag on Sunday, 2 March.

“The 5K Walk and Wag is a fun event for everybody who likes dogs or for those who want to support our worthy cause,” Saskia Salden, a Humane Society director, said.

The first 200 registrations will receive a free T-shirt.

The registration fee is $25 per person and can be processed at the shelter on North Sound Road in George Town or via Cayman Active.

The walkers and waggers will begin the 5K at Safehaven at 7am.

“We encourage everybody to bring their dog, their foster dog or to pick up a dog from the shelter,” Salden said.

“We will be at the shelter from 6am to hand out dogs.

“Every year we have been able to clear the shelter and even had some adoptions.”

Last year, more than 300 people took part and the charity is hoping to see the same number, or even more, on Sunday.

“Fundraising is fundamental for our organization. We always have animals who need special care, some need surgery, which are extra costs on top of all the other expenses we already have,” Salden said.

At any given time, the Humane Society cares for 300 or more cats and dogs, both in the shelter and in foster homes.

The Walk and Wag is the charity’s second biggest fundraiser of the year, after the Furball.
