Young Caymanians given the chance to dive into an ocean career

Young Caymanians who are passionate about the ocean are being invited to apply for one of 10 fully funded scholarships to attend the Central Caribbean Marine Institute’s 2025 Young Environmentalist Leadership Course.

The institute is seeking enthusiastic students to attend its four-month course in which they will learn to dive, study marine science and develop professional skills, which could be the ideal foundation for a career in marine science or conservation.

This opportunity is exclusively for young Caymanians and those with permanent resident status, ages 16-20, who are recent graduates or in their final year of school and interested in a career in marine science, environmental conservation or ecotourism.

Learning to dive

The YELC programme begins in April in Grand Cayman, equipping participants with essential PADI diving certifications through the Rescue Diver course and emergency response training.

In August, the final month of the programme, students attend a seven-day residential experience at the Little Cayman Research Centre. During this week, students will engage in real-world marine research, assist with citizen-science projects, and develop career-building skills through networking and workshops.

Applications must include a completed form, a letter of recommendation and two reference contacts. The deadline is 5pm on 21 March.

More than 120 students have successfully completed the course since it was launched in 2012 with the intention of introducing students to a life in environmentalism and conservation.

CCMI education coordinator Ryan McLaughlin said, “The influence of the YELC programme on individuals that take part creates a distinct and lasting impact. Young Caymanians have the invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge, practical experience, and meaningful connections in the marine science field. This helps to shape the next generation of environmental leaders dedicated to preserving our marine ecosystem.”

The scholarships, which are sponsored by Foster’s, Rotary Central and CG BritCay, cover all YELC programme expenses, including scuba training in Grand Cayman and seven days in Little Cayman, including flights and accommodation.

Students can apply online here and read more information about YELC here.

People of all ages who are interested in marine life under the waves will be able to watch CCMI’s Reefs Go Live, which launches on 21 March. Viewers can watch the season launch video here.
