A lifetime love of journalism

I’ve always loved working in newspapers. Even as a child, when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would say a newspaper journalist.

This perhaps grew from watching my dad and uncles sitting around the kitchen table, reading sections of the paper, discussing the stories they’d read, with curiosity, outrage or pity, depending on the subject matter.

The combination of storytelling, news gathering and information dissemination is, for me, what makes this work so satisfying, and there’s rarely a shortage of news to share in Cayman.

Varied roles

I joined the Cayman Compass as a reporter in 2008, having worked in national and regional newspapers in Ireland, the UK, and Hong Kong.

One of the first things that struck me was the wide-ranging spread of coverage at the Compass, from local human-interest stories to financial and political articles that were relevant internationally.

In my 17 years here, I’ve had several roles, ranging from general news reporter to court reporter to news editor to managing editor and everything in between.

I’ve seen the company go through a variety of metamorphoses, including four different owners, various re-brandings, several newspaper design-and-layout revamps, major expansion of online news, and the addition of TV and radio to Compass Media’s stable of offerings.

But the one thing that has remained consistent throughout is the commitment to fair and accurate coverage of what’s happening on our islands.
