The editorial in the 13 Nov. 1975 edition of The Caymanian Compass did not mince words. It started with “Deplorable is the only adequate description” of the state of roads in George Town and Red Bay. It added, “In a year when over a million dollars was budgeted for a sophisticated road programme, it is somewhat ironic that the most frequently used roads should have potholes so numerous and so deep that driving conditions were poor …” Noting that although the “proper authority” had been repairing potholes, the expectation was that would only help until the next rain “at best”. Another issue was the lack of proper drainage, with the editorial suggesting that money and effort spent on fixing potholes could be better used to accomplish “something of lasting value” to alleviate road conditions in Cayman.
A photo on page 5 showed builder-realtor Norberg Thompson in front of his most recently completed house – which featured an “interesting roof treatment and parquet flooring” – in his new subdivision of Websterville, which would eventually contain 17 homes.
There was also a story on the upcoming premiere of ‘Upon the Seas’, a documentary filmed in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac that covered the history of the islands dating back to their discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1503, and the transition from piracy to permanent settlement. ‘Personalities’ featured in the film included Captain Rayal Bodden, Dr. Roy McTaggart, Ditha Brown, Ernest Panton and Ena Watler.
The new Rosenthal Studio at Kirk Freeport was featured, highlighting the crystal, china and silverware on display. In the photo accompanying the story, the Caribbean sales director for Rosenthal shows a design to Captain Eldon Kirkconnell, pictured on the right.
And, finally, there was a profile of Andy Martin, the “undisputed current king of Country and Western music here in Cayman”. Referring to his “deep, booming voice”, the article noted he had often been called ‘Cayman’s Charley Pride’. His latest single releases were ‘Delworth’s Super Service’ and ‘Mr. Bartender’.
