The Cayman Islands government has launched its annual Giving Tree initiative, a corporate social responsibility programme designed to bring Christmas joy to vulnerable families and individuals across the islands.

In a press release, the government said this year’s initiative began on 17 Nov., with wish trees available at the Government Administration Building in Grand Cayman and the District Administration Office in Cayman Brac.

The government partners with three organisations to identify recipients in need at the Department of Children and Family Services, Family Resource Centre and the Department of Financial Assistance.

Wishes ranging from children’s toys and clothing to grocery store vouchers have been placed on the trees, offering donors a direct way to make a meaningful difference in the community, said the release.

“When civil servants come together for a common cause, we have the power to achieve great things,” said Gloria McField-Nixon, acting deputy governor and chief officer in the Portfolio of the Civil Service.

McField-Nixon added, “Every gift that is given will bring a smile to a child, remind our elderly that they are cherished and renew hope to countless families across our community. By fulfilling a wish from the CIG Giving Tree, we are keeping alive the very best of Caymanian traditions.”

Civil servants and members of the general public are welcome to participate. Gifts may be purchased individually or as part of group efforts, with departments and units encouraged to pool resources for larger requests, such as laptops for students or family dining gift certificates.

Interested members of the public can select from the available wishes and deliver the unwrapped gifts in gift bags with the wish tag attached by Wednesday, 17 Dec.

Gifts should be placed under the Giving Tree, where staff from the partner organisations will sort and distribute them to recipients, organisers said.

An official gift handover ceremony will be scheduled at a later date.
