Craft brewery 19-81 Brewing Co. is inviting women to join in its first-ever International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day event, which will see the creation of a brand-new limited-edition Cayman beer.
The event is part of a global annual initiative held on or around International Women’s Day on 8 March each year to celebrate women in the beer industry and to raise money for women’s causes.
Brewery teams and home brewers around the world are encouraged to come together with their communities and local groups to celebrate women in the beer industry and to create and release collaboration beers inspired by a central theme.

19-81 Brewing Co, whose brewery and tap room is located on Dorcy Drive in George Town, is looking for women to get involved in the production process from start to finish. No previous experience in the brewing industry is needed and participation is free.
Brew day itself will be as close as possible to International Women’s Day and the team will be expected to design all aspects of the new beer, such as beer style, strength and flavours and make the beer itself onsite. In addition to the actual production, there is also a logo to design as well as the product packaging, creating a sales and marketing strategy and delivering the newly created product to market.
Head brewer John Mather said that the International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day initiative has been around for a few years now.
“It’s based on the principle of trying to get more women involved in brewing,” he said. “Originally brewing was primarily a woman’s job right back when beer was first starting to be made.”
Central role for women
The origins of beer date back around 4,000 years with women playing a central role in its production. In England, for example, most ale and beer was produced by women, known as brewsters, until the 16th century when hops first came into use in England and brewing developed into a substantial industry. Records from the town of Faversham in Kent from 1327 show that all 87 brewers operating in the town were women.
Women interested in participating or just hearing more about the project can contact 19-81 Brewing Co on social media to join a WhatsApp group created for the project.

As well as the International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day event, 19-81 is planning to build on the success of its ‘Laughter on Tap’ monthly comedy nights with a competition for amateur comedians coming in April with a cash prize for the winner.
