Caymanians and other British Overseas Territories citizens in the Middle East are being advised to shelter indoors as Iran carries out retaliatory strikes in the region.

An advisory issued by the UK government, which was recirculated Saturday by the Cayman Islands Government and the Governor’s Office, also urges any of its citizens to follow instructions from local authorities and contact the nearest British embassy or high commission for assistance, if required.

The UK government says it is “closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East”.

The US and Israel launched a large-scale attack on Iran shortly after 9:30am (1:30am Cayman time) Saturday. The compound of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was bombed, and the US and Israel say the 86-year-old leader was killed in the attack.

Iran responded by launching missiles towards Israel, as well as at Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, which host US military bases.

The UK government is advising citizens located in the UAE, Israel, Iran, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to shelter in place.

Family members and travelling companions who do not hold UK or British Overseas Territories citizenship are advised to contact their own country’s embassy or high commission in the region for guidance.

The UK government said it was also launching ‘Register Your Presence’ for some countries in the region, starting with Bahrain, Israel, Palestine, Kuwait, Qatar and United Arab Emirates, to “share important information on the situation”.

The UK government notice stated that further updates would be issued as necessary.
