Cayman’s annual three-month lobster season has come to an end, with 28 Feb. being the last day of the year when people can catch lobsters.
Harvesting lobster is strictly prohibited in all Cayman waters from 1 March to 30 Nov. Anyone caught in possession of lobster during this time will be prosecuted, with penalties determined by the courts, the government has said in a statement.
Catching lobsters out of season is an offence under the National Conservation Act. Violations of the legislation can result in fines of up to $500,000 and up to four years in prison.
Conch and whelk season, which opened on 1 Nov., continues until the end of April.
Anyone who witnesses suspected poaching is asked to call 911 or contact the Department of Environment at 916-4271 (Grand Cayman), 925-0185 (Little Cayman), or 911 (Cayman Brac).
