After a season of fast-paced competition featuring more than 130 youth athletes, the inaugural Little Legends League wrapped up with an action-packed day of cricket finals.
The league, launched by the Cayman Islands Cricket Association, concluded on Sunday, 14 June at the Smith Road Oval in George Town, where teams battled it out across three divisions.
Championship action began in the morning with the Girls final, where Island Thunder scored 5-128 off their allotted 12 overs defeating Cayman Heat who finished 27 runs short on 3-101.
In the Under-11 Boys division, the Coconut Crushers posted a score of 3-156 in 12 overs to defeat the Cayman Heat boys who finished on 73 for the loss of 7 wickets.
The grand finale belonged to the Under-15 Boys, with the Calypso Kings facing off against the Tropical Titans.
The Kings batted first, posting a total of 4-67. In response, the Titans fell short by 6 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.
Reflecting on the league, the Cayman Islands Cricket Association said they hope to build on this momentum with plans for a bigger and better season next year with more teams and a longer season.
“This league represents a critical step in youth development plans of the recently elected cricket administration. It has been designed to create a sustainable junior cricket structure, strengthen our local cricket pathway, inspire the next generation of Cayman cricketers, and become an annual flagship youth sporting event for our community,” said the association.
Andrew Ledger, chair of the youth committee for the association, shared his excitement saying, “The future of Cayman Cricket is brighter than ever! Week after week we witnessed packed grounds, incredible support from parents and families, and most importantly, children falling in love with the game of cricket.”
“Now that the league has concluded there are some exciting plans in the pipeline to offer a year-round training programme so interested junior cricketers can continue to develop their skills in the off-season,” Ledger added.
