Top cop is hooked

Fishing in the Cayman Islands is set to spring to life.

The first fishing tournament of 2012 takes place this Saturday and Sunday, 21-22 January. Fishermen are expected to hunt the waters around Grand Cayman and display their catches at the Barcadere Marina from roughly 4pm. Put on by the Cayman Islands Angling Club, tournament registration took place on Thursday and saw an entry fee of CI$300 in effect.

Prize-giving is slated for Monday, 23 January, at the Cracked Conch/Macabuca from 7pm. The prizes on offer are $6,000 for the heaviest wahoo with $3,000 for the second-heaviest and $1,000 for the third-heaviest fish. The heaviest dolphin and yellowfin tuna fetch $2,000 each and the second-heaviest of either fish earns $1,000 each.

There will be a prize for the most marlin releases, a rod and reel combo for the top junior angler and a spa treatment for the top female angler. The boat with the most cumulative weight over two days earns a $500 fuel voucher and the heaviest fish per day earns a $300 fuel voucher. A raffle for two tickets to any Cayman Airways destination is also on offer.

Focus should be on who can top last year’s marks. The big winner was Bruce Bush, who caught a 53lb wahoo on Howdy and earned $5,000. Oliver Dubock aboard Makaira 2 had a 22.4lb dolphin and Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Superintendent Marlon Bodden of Outcast nabbed a 44lb tuna, earning both men $2,000 apiece.

This year’s tournament sponsors are Automotive Art, BCQS, the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, CUC, Guy Harvey, Phoenix Group, Rooster 101, Scotiabank, Scotts Group of Companies and Spa Escape.

News of the 2012 Barcadere Classic comes after local fishing recently got international props. Cayman was featured in the second 2012 episode of ‘George Poveromo’s World of Saltwater Fishing’ on the NBC Sports Network. American TV personality George Poveromo came to Cayman to film the show last November.
