It’s that time of year to don your running or walking shoes and put your best foot forward for the annual Stride Against Cancer.
For those who work up a thirst just getting as far as the sign-up desk set up outside the Cancer Society’s office, a refreshing glass of iced tea awaits them at the “lemonade stall-like” table.
The Cayman Islands Cancer Society will also have sign-up desks dotted around the island in the run-up to Sunday’s run/walk.
Last year, more than 1,300 runners and walkers took part in Stride Against Cancer.
Jennifer Weber of the Cancer Society said she hoped this year’s event would have as many or more participants.
“Come out and sign up,” she said.
Stride Against Cancer, one of the major annual fundraising events for the Cancer Society, will be held Sunday, 29 January.
The event entails a timed half-marathon of 13.1 miles, which begins at 6am from Public Beach on Seven Mile Beach and a quarter-marathon walk/Run of 6.5 miles beginning at 7am from Public Beach. There is also a North Side walk, starting at 7am, from the boat launch next to Over the Edge restaurant and ending at Kaibo. Transport back to the boat launch will be provided.
School children are also getting in on the act, with schools holding their own Stride Against Cancer, the Friday before the even.
The Cancer Society assists cancer victims and their families financially, as well giving them advice and support.
There will be sign-up desks on Thursday, 26 January, at Cafe del Sol in Fort Street from 11.30am to 2pm and at Foster’s at the Strand from 4pm to 8pm; on Friday at Cafe del Sol from 11.30am to 2pm, Sunset House from 5pm to 8pm and the Brickhouse from 4pm to 6pm; and from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, 28 January, at Cost-U-Less, Foster’s stores at the Strand, Countryside and Airport, Kirk’s and Hurley’s supermarkets.
Anyone who wants to join the run/walk, at $25 each, can visit the Cancer Society’s lemonade stall at 114 Maple Road, beside the Cayman Islands Hospital, or visit caymanactive.com website. For more information, call Ann McFarland on 925-1899.
