The dms Organization Ltd. has announced the five finalists for the 2012 Joanna Clarke Excellence in Education Award.
The five finalists represent a collection of projects addressing educational needs within Cayman’s schools and among local nonprofit organisations. The finalists were chosen after a selection process evaluating each project based on the JAC criteria of promoting excellence in education in the Cayman Islands through sustainable and measurable initiatives, involving parents and/or the community. The five finalists are the Grace Christian Academy, the Central Caribbean Marine Institutes, the Cayman Prep and High School, Savannah Primary School and John Gray High School.
Krista Pell, vice president of people development with dms and a JCA committee member, said, “Congratulations are in order to our five finalists. It is humbling to see many worthy applicants making a concerted effort to improve education here in Cayman both through traditional academic endeavours and through extracurricular activities.”
The JCA was created by dms in 2007 to honour local educator Joanna Clarke and to recognise the efforts of all individuals and organisations that contribute to education in the Cayman Islands. Through the JCA, dms grants as much as $12,000 each year to education initiatives.
Grace Christian Academy’s enrichment programmes for students has requested funding in developing eight school-based clubs that will serve to preserve Cayman’s culture and to encourage active participation in the community.
The Central Caribbean Marine Institute Young Environmentalists Green Guide wishes to use potential funds for the development of the Young Environmentalists Green Guide. CCMI has produced green guides written for an adult audience.
The Cayman Prep and High School robotics curriculum has applied for funding to further develop its robotics programme. The programme aims to excite and inspire students about mathematics, science and technology.
Savannah Primary School’s Bringing Technology to the Greater Community requested funding for the installation of interactive white boards and projectors to enhance a more rounded, technologically-advanced mode of education for staff, students and the PTA promoting community learning.
John Gray High School’s The Move seeks to record the translation of the John Gray High School as it moves sites by capturing the voices, personalities and thoughts of the students, staff and families during this historic move.
The winner’s of the Joanna Clarke Excellence in Education Award will be announced at the Joanna Clarke Excellence in Education Dinner on 12 May at 6pm at Grand Old House. Tickets are priced at $75 for educators and $100 for community supporters.
