The MEPCO High Rollers are looking forward to their playoff run.
MEPCO are second in Cayman’s 2012 national roller hockey league at 7-3-1. The squad plays their regular season finale against the 2-8-1 Flames on Tuesday, 15 May, at 8.10pm at Kings Sports Centre.
High Rollers captain Darryl Hather states he is confident in their postseason chances.
“Am I confident? Absolutely,” Hather said. “We were off to a slow start as we got a lot of goals but we did not have the best defence. We built around the offence. Two guys on defence, Brad Kirby and Jamie Lyon, are not defencemen as such but played quite well. They were better than expected and a big reason why we played ourselves into a lot of games.
“We had a balanced attack, with goals from defencemen and our offensive players. Andrew Finlason, our goalie, has also improved. He made big saves. Although he gave up leads early, he made the big saves in the end.”
MEPCO looks poised to grab the second seed and battle the Gamebirds in the first round next Tuesday, 22 May, at 9.10pm. At 6-5, the Gamebirds sit third and play their last match this Tuesday at 9.10pm against the 2-9 Pirate’s Den Spartans. Captain Brendon Malice has guided the Gamebirds with 21 points off 11 assists.
The Club House Sharks have a bye this week and already clinched the regular season title at 11-1. They will play the fourth seed (either the Flames or the Spartans) next Tuesday, 22 May, at 8.10pm at Kings. The Sharks had the league’s best offence with a league-best 99 goals, the best goalie in Scott Hughes (132 saves, league-low 23 goals allowed and a league-best 82.6 save percentage) and the top scorer in Rob Rintoul (26 points off a league-high 12 assists).
