Queen’s torch run late, but fun

Although it started about an hour late {there was apparently problems with an absent torch}, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Torch Run did kick off in West Bay on Saturday, starting at around 4pm.

Cayman Islands Premier McKeeva Bush made a short jog from the West Bay Public Library before handing off to younger legs who carried the torch to North West Point Road where Education Minister Rolston Anglin was waiting.

A similar torch run was planned to begin in North Side but was partially thwarted due to lack of a torch.

Runners there carried the Cayman Islands flag instead, the Caymanian Compass was told, but observers said no one ran from North Side; participants drove away in vehicles.

Next Monday, 4 June, will be the official date to mark Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth’s 60th year on the English throne. It will be a public holiday in the Cayman Islands.

  1. I really don’t know if this will help any one, but I was actually at the torch run on Saturday 26th May for the start of the torch run in North Side. The run got underway at 2:57 pm. starting at Craddock Ebanks Civic Centre taking a route via East End onto Savannah where they were met by the team from West Bay. It is a fact that there was no torch for the group from North Side, also there was no flags to be given to any runner at any time. The young team of runners numbering about people did well in doing the journey in just under 7 minutes per mile.
