Update: Police make an arrest described as “heroic” in connection with a robbery in Bodden Town.

Royal Cayman Islands Police said a man was arrested and a gun and mask recovered following the robbery at Cashwiz in Bodden Town.

About 1.30pm Wednesday, the 911 Emergency Communications Centre received a report about the robbery.. Officers were deployed and a containment was put in place.

As one of the police units made its way to the location, the officers were confronted by a man who was running from the direction of the store, police said. The man threatened the unarmed officers with what appeared to be a gun. The officers challenged the man and he dropped the weapon. The officers then immediately arrested him and removed the firearm.

The gun and a mask suspected of being used in the robbery were recovered. The weapon turned out to be a fake.

The man, who was arrested on suspicion of robbery, remains in police custody.

Acting RCIPS Superintendent Robert Scotland said: ”The actions of the officers involved was nothing short of heroic. They were threatened by an armed suspect and without thinking of their own safety and wellbeing they moved in quickly to ensure that he was arrested and could not harm any members of the public. Fortunately the gun has been confirmed as an imitation – but the officers did not know that at the time. Their actions are testament to the dedication of our staff to do all that they can to keep these Islands safe from those who would threaten that safety through the criminal use of firearms.”

Anyone who has any information about the robbery should contact Bodden Town police station on 947-2220, the RCIPS tip-line 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers 800-8477(TIPS).

  1. The RCIPS work tirelessly to protect us and we should take this opportunity to extend our sincere thanks for their stirling work and to give thanks for the invaluable service they provide us. As George Orwell said famously: We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm. Thank you all guys, a wonderful job well done. Blessed are the peacemakers

  2. Bless these brave officers. They need to be armed because the next time they may not be as fortunate. What in the world is wrong with the law makers making decision regarding police officers and guards being armed, the law is wrong.

  3. Kudos to the RCIPS staff that made this happen. I also feel strongly that the police force should be armed. Hopefully this gets prosecuted quickly with the maximum amount of time handed down. When you threaten someone, fake gun or not, you deserve no leniency.

  4. I may be wrong but what I believed assisted in the capture of this robber was the 911 command centre and police quick action. Before the 911 command centre use to ask too many questions while the robber was getting away. I am sure they have learnt to dispatch and then ask questions same time. Very good job RCIP and command centre very good job.

  5. Kudos to these exceptionally brave and courageous police officers who confronted this armed, masked thug. I hope they will get the appropriate recognition by the RCIPS for their bravery in the face of what could be instant death. These officers should have been armed!

May this incident remind us all the danger our police face in fighting crime in Cayman today. Again, congratulations to the officers.
