Back up support is fully running

The Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon, Half-Marathon and Four-Person Relay is only nine weeks away and there are a number of fitness centres on island who are stepping up and offering their services to help both novice and veteran runners train for the event and achieve their personal goals.

Over that time ENERGY Essential Fitness will be offering workshops that include running, stretching and core workouts for the race on Sunday 2 December.

Sessions such as ‘Keep the Motor Running’, ‘Running Kick Start’, ‘Stay Strong’ and ‘Keeping Healthy and Injury Free’ help keep runners educated, motivated and healthy for the race.

These classes are open to those running/walking the full marathon, half marathon or team relay and cost no more than $15. Anyone interested is encouraged to book early as space is limited, and can call 946-6006 or email: [email protected] for more information.

“ENERGY’s training programmes are based on the fundamental principles of core strength and functional fitness. We want to help our clients achieve their goals safely and effectively,” explained Colleen Brummer, an instructor at ENERGY. “Our Marathon Workshop Series is a perfect example of that: workouts that improve core strength, create flexibility and encourage proper running techniques.”

Body Now Athletic Training in conjunction with Body Now 4 Mums and Kids is offering a group class, ‘Learn To Run’, which targets people who have never run before or have taken a break from running and want to start doing it again.

Taught by Kara Donnelly, who ran her very first full marathon in the 2011 Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon, this six-week programme includes fitness assessments, body fat measurements and goal setting and costs $125.

Anyone interested can call 949-6867 or email: [email protected] for more information.

Laura Ribbins of Fitness Connection will also be offering some training and conditioning classes to people interested in participating in either the Cayman Marathon events or the Cayman Triathlon in November. Ribbins has been helping people prepare for the Marathon since the race’s inception, and can be contacted on 916.0703 or by email at [email protected]

Along with offering a free yoga class to every registered runner upon proof of registration, marathon sponsor Bliss Living Yoga is adding five classes a day to its existing schedule starting in November when it opens its new studio.

In addition, Bliss is offering a week’s introduction to unlimited yoga at Bliss is $25 and a month of unlimited yoga for $99.

“All of our classes are beneficial to runners,” said Bliss owner Janelle Kroon. “Hot Yoga in particular is an awesome combination with running. We also have competitive runners who participate in Power and Flow classes everyday as well. Just the breath work alone throughout the class improves running tremendously.”

“Having a yoga practice whilst training for a long run or marathon or simply having a regular running routine is the perfect balance to be able to maintain a high level of performance and long term joint, connective tissue and muscle health sustainability,” said Kroon.

“When you practice bringing your body back into optimal balance and alignment through stretching, strengthening and anatomical awareness, you can be sure to be running for years to come. At Bliss we have seen runners and other athletes improve in their sport dramatically with a regular Yoga practice.”

For more information on Bliss’ class schedule, call 949-9642 or email: [email protected].

“We are so excited to hear about these fitness centres that have offered guidance and support to people who are interested in participating in the Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon,” said Rhonda Kelly, race director.

“There are so many people who are unsure about how to train, whether they are doing it right or doing enough and then there are those who might not have the support system and need some motivation.

“These programmes are a great example of Cayman’s support for the marathon. They are also a great way to meet new people, learn some useful training tips and prepare both mentally and physically for the event. I encourage everyone, especially novice runners, to sign up for one of these programmes and expect great results on the day.”
