Tour Europe with Cine Club

Vive la France!

The National Gallery’s Cine Club season opens in France with a screening of the 2011 movie “Les Intouchables” on Monday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. The movie, an uplifting comedy about friendship and the strength of the human spirit, broke box office records across France.

Other films set to be screened include the 2012 award-winning drama “Amour,” the 1998 German movie “Run Lola Run” and the Russian film “Mermaid” from 2000.

“This season we are showing comedy, romance, action and drama from across Europe,” Ginny Copley, National Gallery education manager said. “Each of the chosen films are enjoyable and highly acclaimed.”

Membership to Cine Club, which gives access to this season’s six meetings, refreshments, film hand-outs and member discussions, is $50. Alternatively, a $10 drop-in rate is offered.

The National Gallery’s movies, which are screened every other Monday, are all popular award-winning features from England, France, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Austria and Russia.

Cine Club is an ongoing gallery program which aims to offer the community access to independent and art-house movies outside of mainstream films.

Free screening

In celebration of the upcoming Cine Club season, the gallery will be offering a free screening of two critically acclaimed British movies, “Mrs. Brown” and “Becoming Jane” on Saturday, Jan. 11. “Mrs. Brown” stars Judi Dench and centers on the life and times of Queen Victoria. “Becoming Jane” stars Anne Hathaway and paints a biographical portrait of pre-fame Jane Austin and her romance with a young Irishman. “Mrs. Brown” will be shown at 10 a.m. and Becoming Jane at 12:15 p.m. Both screenings are free.

“Our British movies event kicks-off this exciting new Cine Club season of carefully curated films,” Copley said. “Everyone is invited to drop in and enjoy a cinematic trip to old England and to find out more about the Cine Club program. The National Gallery Dart Auditorium holds just over 50 moviegoers, so seating at this event will be offered on a first come, first served basis.”
