Tourism sector apprentices graduate

Six students have graduated from the Tourism Apprenticeship Training Program – the last graduates to do so.

The program is being replaced by the School of Hospitality Studies – a new partnership between government and the private sector to expand entry-level training in tourism to 25 students.

The six students completed instruction and training in the areas of food and beverage, food preparation and food safety.

They received qualifications through the U.K.-based vocational training organization City and Guilds.

The six apprentices were honored in a ceremony at Luca restaurant last month.

A Department of Tourism spokesman said the apprenticeship program had served Cayman well over the years, with 78 students graduating since its inception in 2006.

The on-the-job training each graduate received was facilitated by local businesses, including the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort, the Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa, Michael’s Genuine Food and Drink, Ortanique restaurant, the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman and Grand Cayman Beach Suites, the spokesman added.
