The Breeze Fusion road run and walk is staged soon over a longer distance and will have a new champion.
The eighth annual Breeze Fusion Walk/Run is on Nov. 1, starting at 6.30 a.m. from Smith’s Cove.
Originally conceived as a family-oriented event in 2007, this year’s fundraiser is increased from two miles to a more competitive 5k (3.1 miles), as well as a children’s race.
Last year’s champ Dominic Corbin has returned to live in England and the likeliest candidates for the title if they run will be teenager Dominic Dyer, Tahj Lewis, Hayden Isbister and David Walker. Jason Saunders has just started training again after recovering from a bike accident and is targeting this event as his comeback race. He hopes to be fit enough to vie for the half marathon title on Dec. 7.
Breeze Fusion is organized by Radio Cayman/Breeze FM and the Phoenix Athletic Club, assisted by coach Jerry Harper and service club volunteers.
As is customary, part proceeds will go to the National Council for Voluntary Organizations, an independent, non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to the care, education and well–being of hundreds of children and families in need of support in the Cayman Islands. The second beneficiary this year is John Gray High School’s “Helping Hands Program,” through which the school provides, among other things, hot meals, uniforms and school supplies for any grade 7 to 11 child in need of assistance.
Last year, the NCVO received $1,000 from this event.
So far, sponsors Cayman National, Roma United Sports Club, Maedac Supply Company through their WATA brand, and Grand Old House, have already confirmed their support.
All participants receive an event T-shirt and goodie bag. Trophies go to the overall male and female finishers in the run, along with medals and prizes to the top competitors in each age category for both the run and walk, with random prizes also up for grabs.
Event registration is $15 for adults, $10 for students under 16 and is ongoing at www.radiocayman.gov.ky. and www.caymanactive.com/breeze.
