The real news is not usually glamorous, it seldom causes excitement and, if the truth be told, it can often be boring.
But for 364 days of the year – and 365 days of this leap year – the Caymanian Compass strives to bring the Cayman Islands the news as accurately and fairly as possible, regardless of whether the news is exciting or not Unlike some other news media – and we are certainly not mentioning anyone by name – we believe our mission is to impart to our readers the true news as we know it, full stop.
Of course, as most of our readers are now aware, we do allow ourselves to venture into the world of fiction one day per year and that is today, April Fool’s Day.
Hopefully by now readers will have realised that one of the stories on the front page of our newspaper today is a complete sham. We won’t say there isn’t a word of truth in it because the technology described in the story is actually on the drawing board and a prototype is expected to be unveiled. In 2015 that is.
Over the years, when we’ve run our now-traditional April Fool’s stories and unfailingly fooled some of our readers – at least for a while – we have also angered some people.
This year, especially, with everything that happened last week, some will probably think our little ruse today inappropriate. On the contrary, we believe it is at times like this that a little good-spirited humour is just what is needed to soothe our shaken souls.
However, we can understand why readers are jarred when we take such liberties with the truth, for we also understand we are accepted as the publication of record in the Cayman Islands. For this reason, we know we are often held to a higher level of accountability.
We humbly ask, however, that you allow us each year this one indiscretion with the truth, this one bit of April foolishness. It is something we have come to look forward to almost as much as our readers.
But please: feel free to hold us accountable to the truth for every other day of the year, and we will strive to merit your confidence.
