Ms Michelle Isaacs was called to the Cayman Bar on 26 March, with the application for her admission moved by Attorney Ingrid Pierce on behalf of Walkers.
Ms Isaacs is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom (Zillah) Isaacs and the granddaughter of Sir Vassel Johnson and Lady (Rita) Johnson. Her paternal grandparents, Michael and Anthony and Edith Isaacs are deceased.
Justice Nigel Meeson presided at the ceremony and was advised by Ms Pierce of the young Caymanian’s background.
Ms Isaacs was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and was brought to the Cayman Islands when she was four. She attended Cayman Preparatory School and St. Ignatius High School, where was frequently on the honour roll. She won the 1993 intramural earth poetry competition.
She attended the University of Guelph in Canada, where she obtained Bachelor of Commerce degree with honours, majoring in hospitality and restaurant management. She worked in the hospitality industry during the summer periods and was an active member of the West Indian Students association.
In 2003, Ms Isaacs joined Walkers as an executive legal secretary in the Corporate Department. She then attended BPP Law School in London, UK, on a full scholarship from Walkers. The scholarship is awarded to the candidate with the highest academic achievement, Ms Pierce explained.
In 2005, Ms Isaacs earned her Graduate Diploma in Law, graduating with commendation. She completed her legal practice Certificate the following year, graduating with high commendation.
During this time she volunteered with Amicus, a non-profit organisation providing legal advice to pro bone programmes. She undertook research and prepared monthly reports for one year on the progress of the death penalty legislation and ongoing cases in South Carolina
In 2006 Ms Isaacs was articled to Walkers senior partner Wayne Panton. She spent the next 18 months in the Corporate and International Finance Department and the Litigation Department. Her training included private equity, mutual funds, structured finance, trusts, real estate, civil and criminal litigation.
Ms Pierce advised that the new attorney planned to take the California Bar exam this summer and practise there for a while. ‘We hope she will rejoin Walkers in the future,’ she concluded.
‘How could I not grant the application after hearting those submissions?’ Justice Meeson asked. He said Ms Isaac’s outstanding academic record helped ensure that she would succeed in everything she did.
Ms Isaacs thanked Walkers for making possible her education in London and she paid tribute to Mr. Panton and Attorney Sara Collins for their mentorship. She expressed appreciation to her parents and fiancé for their support and said she now felt ready to take on new challenges.
