Earth Day Bags

The Chamber of Commerce and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office collaborated recently to produce special environmentally friendly Earth Day bags to be distributed during Earth Week.

In an effort to encourage residents of the Cayman Islands to use less plastic bags, the Chamber of Commerce FCO bags are intended to be reusable shopping bags. ‘Each year hundreds of thousands of plastic shopping bags end up in our landfill, which is getting bigger everyday! It takes almost 1,000 years for these bags to disintegrate,’ explained Chamber President Mr. James Tibbetts. ‘Recently I was given a copy of ‘The Green Book’ by a Chamber member. It says that by reducing plastic bag consumption by just two bags per week, you’ll throw away at least one hundred fewer bags a year. If we all did our part and used reusable bags such as the Chamber of Commerce FCO Bags we can really make a difference.’

Registered volunteers taking part in the Chamber of Commerce Earth Day Roadside Clean-Up on Saturday 19th April will each receive a bag.

”It is important we all play our part to protect our beautiful environment,’ said H.E. The Governor Mr. Stuart Jack, CVO. ‘One way is to reduce the amount of garbage we produce. So I am delighted that the Chamber of Commerce, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and my office have come together to encourage the use of reusable bags. And I urge as many people as possible to help with the Earth Day clean-up.’

Earth Week runs from Saturday, 19th April to Saturday, 26th April, with Earth Day falling on Tuesday, 22nd. All businesses and Government agencies are invited to participate and celebrate in the entire Earth Week vision. The Chamber encourages the community to come out and be a part of the 11th Annual Roadside Clean-Up helping to make Cayman a cleaner, healthier and more beautiful place to live. Residents, schools, businesses and organisations can sign up to organise a team to clean up designated areas on all three islands. The Chamber will provide gloves and garbage bags for all teams and the first 1,000 volunteers will receive a free Earth Day T-shirt.
