Playoff time for football lovers

The local indoor football season has recently ended and the playoffs are just about to start.

The 2007-2008 version of the Digicel Five-A-Side football league finished on Monday 7 April. The playoffs began on Monday 14 April.

The playoffs will see teams from both Division One and Two. In total, roughly 23 teams will be in action over the course of the next month.

The division one playoffs are set to start 21 April. The top seven teams will battle it out and a champion is slated to be crowned 5 May.

Meanwhile division two will field the top eight teams from the Live and Broadband conferences. The top seeds from one group will face the lower seeds of the other. The overall champion is expected to be named on 7 May.

One of the first teams in action for division one will be Burger King. They lost a tight battle for the division title to CML Claymores.

The complete division one playoff schedule is as follows:

Monday 21 April will see start of play in the quarterfinals. At 7pm, #2 seed Burger King take on #7 Island Paving. Then at 8pm, #3 Miracle Brokers take on #6 McAlpine 1 while #4 Century 21 battle #5 Caybrew All-Stars at 9pm. #1 seed CML have a bye week.

Then the semi-finals get underway Monday 28 April. At 7pm, #1 CML go into action against the winner of the third quarterfinal game before the winners of the other quarterfinal games face off at 8pm.

Afterwards, the championship game will be on display. Monday 7 May will see an epic showdown between the winners of both semi-final games.

Meanwhile in division two, RC Lions will face the number eight seed out of the Live conference. They won the Broadband section of the division.

As stated previously, the division two playoff schedules will feature two pools. Pool one will see its quarterfinals start Monday 14 April. At 7pm, #1 RC Lions battle #8 Brickhouse; then at 8pm #2 McAlpine 2 face #7 Coconut Joes and finally at 9pm #3 Fortis Elite take on #6 KPMG. The last quarterfinal game is on Tuesday 15 April at 8pm as #4 PWC face #5 HSBC.

From there, action shifts to the semi-finals. Game one is on Tuesday 22 April featuring the winners of quarterfinals one and four while game two is on Wednesday 23 April with the winners of quarterfinals two and three. Both games start at 9pm.

Then will come time for the finals. The winners of both semi-final games will square off Wednesday 30 April at 7pm.

Pool two will see its quarterfinals start Tuesday 15 April with #4 Old Boys against #5 Deloitte. From there action shifts to Wednesday 16 April. At 7pm, #1 Androgroup clash with #8 CI Law School; then at 8pm #2 DDL encounter #7 Caledonian and finally at 9pm #3 HMP take on #6 Ernst & Young.

After that will be the semi-finals on Wednesday 23 April. Game one is at 7pm featuring the winners of quarterfinals one and four while game two is at 8pm as the winners of quarterfinals two and three battle it out.

Thereafter comes the finals. The winners of both semi-final games will square off Wednesday 30 April at 7pm.

Thereafter comes the division two championship game. The winners of pool one and two square off on Wednesday 7 May at 7pm.

The final regular season standings show both divisions had intense competition. In division one, CML Claymores won the league with 26 points while Burger King were second with 24 points.

Third place fell to Miracle Brokers with 17 points as they held a head-to-head tie-breaker over fourth place finisher Century 21 who also had 17 points.

The bottom end of the league saw Caybrew All-Stars finish fifth with 16 points, McAlpine One was sixth with 14 points and finally Island Paving ended up in the cellar with a win and three points.

Ben Marler was the lead scorer in division one for the second straight year. He led the group in scoring with 22 goals for CML Claymores. Marlon Robinson of Caybrew All Stars ended up second with 18 goals and Steve McIntosh of CML Claymores finished third with 15 goals.

In division two, RC Lions claimed the broadband conference title. Second went to McAlpine 2 and Fortis Elite claimed third. Fourth place went to PriceWaterHouse Coopers, Deloitte claimed fifth and sixth went to Ernst & Young.

Rounding out the bottom of the conference, seventh spot went to Caledonian and Cayman Islands Law School were in the eighth and final spot.

In the Live conference, Androgroup climbed to the top with 28 points. DDL were second with 27 points and HMP were third with 23 points.

Old Boys claimed the fourth spot with 20 points, HSBC ended up fifth with 15 points and KPMG nabbed the sixth spot with 11 points.

Looking towards the bottom, Coconut Joes were in seventh with 10 points and Brickhouse finished in the eight and final spot with five points.

Chris Ebanks was the lead scorer in the Live conference. He paced the field with 19 goals for HSBC. Ian Kenyon was a close second with 18 goals for Coconut Joes and James Kennedy was third with 16 goals for DDL.

Raymond Singh, Athletic Director of Kings Sports Centre, says the Five-A-Side season showed the sport grow to a very competitive level.

‘I would like to say congratulations to the CML Claymores, RC Lions and Androgroup for taking the 1st place seeds. This season has seen a lot of lead changes. For example, in division one there was 12 different league changes in the short 14 week season.
