McIntyre bailed, appeal pending

Former prison Education Coordinator Adam McIntyre was released on bail Thursday, pending an appeal of theft convictions recorded against him in the Grand Court recently.

Justice Alexander Henderson granted McIntyre bail in a Grand Court chambers hearing that took place behind closed doors.

The former prison officer was sentenced to 12 months prison on Thursday, 17 April, after he was found guilty of stealing money from inmates and their families that was meant to pay for international correspondence courses for the inmates.

McIntyre had been in custody at the George Town Police Station pending the outcome of the bail application.

With an appeal unlikely to come before the courts in the next year, Defence Attorney Howard Hamilton QC, said there was a real chance his client could wind up serving the full 12 month sentence, only to be acquitted or sentenced to less time.

In granting bail, the judge was satisfied McIntyre had arguable grounds of appeal, Mr. Hamilton said.

The judge had also been satisfied there was no likelihood of McIntyre interfering with witnesses, or absconding, he added.

McIntyre was bailed on a $5,000 surety, on the conditions that he surrenders his travel documents, not apply for any other passport, not attempt to leave the jurisdiction and not contact any Crown witnesses.

A date for the appeal is yet to be set.
