One of the best ways to enjoy the
weekend is to pause and wind down with a glass of good wine. Of course, when it
is for a good cause, even better.
On Saturday evening, 6 November,
Cayman Animal Rescue Enthusiasts will host Paws for Wine, a wine tasting and
auction event at Guy Harvey’s Island Grill.
“This is a chance for wine buffs
and animal lovers to get together, have fun and socialise in a relaxed
atmosphere, taste some great wines and nibble on some delicious canapés and
know that they are helping the animals here in Cayman by supporting a worthy
cause,” said Lesley Agostinelli, a volunteer with CARE.
The event is sponsored by
Blackbeard’s, which will provide a selection of nine wines from four countries
for the wine tasting portion of the evening, set to start at 6.30pm. A silent
auction will take place during the course of the evening as well.
The highlight of the evening
promises to be the live auction, which is set to start at 8pm and will be
presided over by master of ceremonies Jay Ehrhart of Radio Cayman. Items up for
auction will include staycations and dive staycations at a variety of resorts,
including Caribbean Club, The Reef Resort, Compass Point Dive Resort, Treasure
Island, The Marriott and Comfort Suites. There will also be return airline
tickets for two from Cayman Airways to the Brac, as well as several restaurant
vouchers for Agua, Pappagallo’s, Osetra Bay and The Brasserie.
Other items will include dive
certification with Red Sail Sports, furniture from Sticks and Stones, yoga
classes from Body Works and Bliss Yoga, as well as gift baskets from Island Vet
and Cayman Animal Hospital. There will also be pet grooming from Mel Hulse and
Pet Paradise and dog training classes from Kenneth Morgan. Add to that a gift
basket and test drive experience with Audi/Arch Automotive, vouchers from Lily
Pulitzer and Tiffany’s and legal advice from Priestley’s, along with several
paintings and a custom pet portrait from Terry Gunderson, and there is more
than enough to satisfy the most discerning bidder.
Even those who do not taste success
at the live and silent auctions still might not go home empty handed, as there
will also be a raffle with some excellent prizes up for grabs, including gift baskets
and gift certificates for various restaurants.
The event is an important
fundraiser for CARE, which, according to Ms Agostinelli has been surviving on
small fundraising events thus far.
“This to date is the largest
fundraiser we have held, but if we are to continue to grow and make a
difference with the over-population problem, then we need funding. We do not
receive any government funding, nor do we have any overheads or staff costs.
Our vet bills average $3,000 a month, and with the dream to be able to offer a
dedicated monthly spay and neuter surgery day to the community, more funds are
needed in order to achieve our goal,” said Ms Agostinelli.
CARE is a small but enthusiastic
group of volunteers who give up much of their spare time to raise funds and
relocate those animals fortunate enough to get adopted overseas through CARE’s
alliance with no-kill shelters and various families across the US. Since July
2008 CARE has successfully relocated 239 dogs to no-kill shelters or to
families across the US, in addition to successfully finding homes for 25 dogs
on Island.
Tickets cost $50 and include six
tastings, canapés and entry in the raffle. Tickets are sponsored by Pet
Paradise and will be available at the door, pre-purchased from Guy Harvey’s, or
by calling 938-2273 or by emailing [email protected]
