Lone Star gets sporty do-over

Any sports fans who happened to go
to the Lone Star Bar and Grill on West Bay Road a couple of Sunday ago enjoyed
a champion’s treat. Cheap beers, half-price food specials and a bank of new flat-screen
TVs showing all the American football games. It was the launch of the Lone Star
as a sports bar to compete with the other established ones, and judging by the
full house and amount of food and liquor consumed, it was an unqualified success,
especially on the newly refurbished outside patio bar.

Lone Star owner Kim Lund said: “The
Lone Star has been around for around 25 years and Mike Flowers (the previous
owner) did a phenomenal job, but in the last few years it’s needed a surge of
fresh energy. I’ve made a little investment and decided to give the Lone Star
more of a sports bar feel. There are now 15 flat-screens, high definition TVs
with the Dish Direct all sports package.

“Our new menu is real Texas BBQ and
smokehouse, presenting the most tasty, mouth-watering smoked brisket, pulled
pork, ribs, chicken and handmade burgers – all Texas style.”

As well as all the top American
sports events, rugby, soccer, cricket, boxing and many more are all being shown
at the Lone Star now.

Canadian Lund, 53, is best known as
the owner of the real estate firm REMAX but he is a life-long sportsman who
still runs every morning with his dog to keep fit. Growing in up in Kitchener,
Ontario, he enjoyed a variety of sports, including lacrosse, martial arts,
hockey, rugby and even boxed to a high standard. He can boast that as an
accomplished amateur middleweight he would be the main event and a promising
heavyweight novice would be down the bill. That heavyweight turned out to be
quite good, actually. In fact, he became heavyweight champion of the
world…Lennox Lewis. Another youngster who opened Lund’s shows who went all
the way in the pros was Donnie Lalonde, eventual world light-heavyweight champ.
“Yes, I used to be the main event and Lennox was behind me. That changed pretty
quickly!

“Our next big boxing event is the
Manny Pacquiao fight against Antonio Margarito on 13 November.”
