The Legislative Assembly will commence its final Meeting of the 2006-07 Session today, but it won’t last long.
Leader of Government Business Kurt Tibbetts said at the Cabinet press briefing Friday that at the conclusion of today’s sitting, the House will adjourn until 22 March.
‘The business in Legislative Assembly this time is not extensive,’ Mr. Tibbetts said.
‘We didn’t want it to be very long; the Budget and Throne Speech [Meeting] starts 27 April.’
During today’s sitting, the country will finally see the long-awaited draft discussion bill on tobacco legislation, Mr. Tibbetts said, adding that there would also be ‘eight or nine reports’ tabled, some Parliamentary questions answered and one Private Member’s Motion.
That Motion will be brought by backbencher Osbourne Bodden, who wants the Government to consider amending the Development and Planning Law and Regulations to include minimum property standards and penalties for failing to adhere to those standards.
Mr. Bodden said Friday that the minimum property standards he’s thinking about would include guidelines on vegetation growth in residential neighbourhoods; properties left derelict after Hurricane Ivan; and derelict vehicles or other trash left on properties
Members of the Legislative Assembly will also receive copies of several bills that will be tabled later this month. Those bills will include an amendment to the Immigration Bill; an amendment to the Local Companies Control Licence Bill; and the Public Records Bill.
Mr. Tibbetts said that the reason the House will not resume until 22 March was to allow for the required 21 days for all members to consider the bills after receiving copies.
Cabinet Minister Alden McLaughlin said the amendments to the Immigration Bill were ‘clean-up items’ of issues that the various Immigration Boards have discovered while trying to use the amended law passed in late December.
‘There is no fundamental change,’ he said. ‘It’s just a clean-up exercise.’
Also on the agenda during the Meeting will be the tabling of National Conservation Discussion Bill.
Mr. Tibbetts said he also hoped to table the Builder’s Bill when the House resumes later this month.
