Oscar Meyer and Louis Rich Cooked Chicken Breast Cuts and Strips have been pulled from supermarket shelves in the Cayman Islands in connection with an outbreak of the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.
Department of Environmental Health officials instruct residents to discard products bearing the number P-19676.
The number will be inside of the USDA mark of inspection on the front of each package. The packages also have a use by date of before 28 May 2007.
Residents are instructed to not consume these specific Oscar Meyer and Louis Rich Cooked Chicken Breast Cuts, states a press release.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea. If you experience any of these symptoms please contact your health care provider immediately.
Pregnant women need to be especially cautious, as listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Serious and sometimes fatal infections may also develop in persons with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, and persons undergoing chemotherapy or who are HIV positive. So far, the US Food and Drug Administration has reported no Listeria monocytogenes-related illnesses in the US.
Listeria can grow in the refrigerator, so keep refrigerators at 40º Fahrenheit or lower and freezers at 0º Fahrenheit or lower. Refrigerator temperatures can be regularly checked using an appliance thermometer.
