Elderly man charged in murder

A 73-year-old man was charged with murder over the weekend in connection with the slaying of a former Cayman Islands police officer.

Windell Dilbert, a George Town resident, is scheduled to appear in court today.

Dilbert was arrested shortly after Michael Ebanks, 40, was found dead in a Courts Road home neighbours said the two men shared. Police said the arrest occurred near the crime scene.

Witnesses at the scene said Mr. Ebanks and the suspect were heard arguing about cigarettes the afternoon of 1 June before Mr. Ebanks was found dead.

Neighbours also said Dibert used a machete in the attack. Police said the victim was found in a pool of blood inside the home.

While refusing to discuss specifics, Department of Children and Family Services Director Deanna Look Loy confirmed last week that Dilbert had been a social services client.

The killing is the first murder investigated by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service in 2007.
