Man charged in hand-severing

Several criminal charges were filed Friday against a man who police said attacked a woman in the vicinity of the Compass Centre parking lot with a machete, severing one of her hands.

Henricho Everton Swaby, 34, now faces attempted murder, assault causing grievous bodily harm, assault causing actual bodily harm and kidnapping of a minor charges.

The victim in the attack, 31-year-old Marlene Smith, has since been flown to a Miami hospital and has undergone successful surgery to reattach her hand.

It’s believed the attack occurred because the suspect was angry over Ms Smith’s decision to end their relationship.

Witnesses initially reported the disturbance in the parking lot to 911 around 9.30pm, 1 June. Police said Swaby turned himself in about two hours later at the George Town Police station.

The kidnapping charge is related to the attempted murder case, according to police. Police said the suspect had a minor child with him at the time of the attack. The child is believed to have witnessed the incident.

As is our standard policy in such cases, the Caymanian Compass is withholding the child’s name to protect their identity.

Swaby is still in custody and is due to appear in court later today.
