Girls a hit in Chuggers’ win

All five of the CIC Chuggers’ girls collected hits to help lead the team to a 23-7 victory over KPMG-B on Tuesday night at the Field of Dreams.

The Chuggers jumped out to an early lead with seven runs in the first inning and put the game away with eight-run rally that started with two outs in the fifth inning.

‘Our girls were phenomenal out there,’ said Chuggers’ coach Alan Markoff. ‘Their seven hits kept rallies going, especially in our two big innings.’

Susan Schlosser went 2 for 4 with a run scored, and Susanne Clements beat out two infield hits and scored a run for the Chuggers.

The men on the team hit KPMG hard as well. Alan Markoff went 4 for 5 with two triples, a home run and 6 RBI; Donnie House went 4 for 4 with 3 runs and 3 RBI, and Pat Haag, John Rhynold and Shawn Wilcox all hit home runs.

Wilcox used interesting strategy to draw the outfield in on his home run. He took mighty swings and either missed or hit foul tips on the first two pitches before hitting the ball over the left fielder’s head.

Unfortunately, Wilcox pulled a leg muscle running out his home run and had to be put on the 15-day disabled list after the game.

‘It just goes to show that even the young players on the team have to stretch properly,’ said Coach Markoff. ‘We really can’t afford many injuries like this, especially since Shawn had to use precious ice from the beer cooler on his leg.’

The Chuggers used a new defensive alignment and got sterling games from Donnie House at shortstop and Mark Wallace, who got the surprise start at pitcher.

‘I had good stuff tonight,’ said Wallace. ‘My change-up was working well, and they kept pounding my sinker into the ground.’

Team owner, insurance mogul Kim ‘the Boss’ Awe took full credit for the victory.

‘I knew if they would just listen to me and try to relax, they could play better,’ the Boss said. ‘It’s like I tell my insurance clients all the time: When you have peace of mind, you can accomplish great things.

‘Now if they will only listen to me about getting mortgage protection, they could accomplish great things in all aspects of their life.’

The Chuggers face a big challenge next week, first with a game against the high-scoring Master Batters at 6:30 on Wednesday and then in a make-up game against Fortis at 8:30 the following night.

‘Two games in two nights. At my age, I pray for rain the second night,’ said Coach Markoff.
