The swearing in of Members of the Legislative Assembly today marks a new era in Government.
After months of politicking, members of the People’s Progressive Movement have a majority of seats in the Legislative Assembly and will form the Cabinet.
The leader of the new government, Mr. Kurt Tibbetts, has promised that his party will rebuild trust and confidence in the country’s leadership and vows to restore integrity and decency to Government.
Much of the campaign process was filled with rancour and vitriol.
It is refreshing to learn that members of the reigning Government will forget about all of the mudslinging and past bitterness in an effort to build a better Cayman Islands.
Members of the new Government have made a 100-day promise to the people of the Cayman Islands.
That promise includes improved educational facilities, a pumping up of the Royal Cayman Islands Police and a commitment to investigate allegations of corruption and intimidation by the United Democratic Party.
But Mr. Tibbetts has promised there will be no victimisations or witch hunts.
He’s also promised that his party won’t tear down the work of past governments, but instead build on the past for a brighter future.
Mr. Tibbetts has also vowed that his Government will practice openness, transparency, accountability, tolerance and adhere to the rules of law.
It is hoped that the new Government lives up to these ideals during and long after the 100-day promise.
The new Government is to be respected and all in the Cayman Islands should work with the governing and opposing MLA’s to make the Cayman Islands better and stronger.
This is the time for national healing.
Let it begin today with the swearing in of the Government slated to lead this country for the next four years.
