Division One Cricket
Attribute it to his recently attained connubial status or credit it to his superior batsmanship.
Whatever the reason, an unprecedented fourth consecutive century by the seemingly irrepressible Pearson Best propelled Police to the top of the Division One stand-ings with a cantering victory over Prison when the Money Express Division One cricket competition resumed at the J.P.O. last Sunday.
Police batted first and compiled a healthy 238 for 3 in 48 overs.
Assisting Best (105 n.o.) was opener Morris with 78. The usually tactical cap-tain, Gordon had no counter to the 141 run second wicket partnership which launched the eventual total. With national batsmen of renown, like Saheed Mohammed, Steve Gordon and Larry Cunningham batting for Prison acquiring a sub 250 target is not inconceivable.
However, first change medium pacer Kevon Basil proceeded to rip the entrails from the Prison batting with a career best of 6 – 44 that sent statisticians scurrying to the record books. Six wickets in a one dayer is a rarity.
Prison eventually rallied to 195 all out with K. Williams contributing a con-ciliatory 51. In the other division One Match strong contenders By-Rite recorded an easy vic-tory over the enigmatic Greenies at Smith Road.
Greenies were bundled out for 133 with Christopher Wright having the excellent returns of 5- 28 and C. Wright 3 – 32.
By- Rite erased the target for the loss of 7 wickets. Joseph Kirk Connell on holiday from college top scored with 47.
Division Two Cricket
Welly’s ICC cricket team encountered what would be a consequential impediment on their way to the Division 2 cricket championship when they lost to Esso in a Money Express fixture at the J.P.O. last Saturday.
The match was reduced to a 25 over business after overnight showers affected the playing surface precipitating a late start.
In these truncated versions of an al-ready abbreviated game, wisdom dictates that the team that wins the toss does the chasing. Therefore Welly’s captain had no compunction in fielding first after be-ing favored by the coin.
Much to their credit Esso overcame the less than ideal batting conditions and reached a more than useful total of 129 – 7.
Mac Donald, Chase, Salesman and Babb all subscribed with the bat. Conversely the combined efforts of the Daleys, Cohen and Horace yielded 62 runs from 8 overs.
To get over 120 runs in bowler friendly conditions was always going to be a challenge especially facing utility bowlers the likes of Sam Suberan, Salesman and Higgins whose collaborated efforts of 14 overs conceded a mere 40 runs.
Young Abali Hoilett and Miguel Palmer offered some defiance with 35 n.o. and
35 respectively. But at the end of 25 overs Welly’s were two boundaries short of their target.
In the Brac, Paramount recorded the highest total on record in the Cayman Islands in a 40 over game, 347 -9.
Williams top scored with 76 runs and Dino McInniss contributed with 70 runs.
In reply, Cayman Brac was all out for 252.
James Reid- 66 and Dawson with 61 were the leading batsmen.
Plowright got 4 wickets for the victors.
