Miss Cayman misses Miss Universe

Cayman will not be represented at next Tuesday’s Miss Universe contest as the reigning Miss Cayman was the country’s 2004 delegate.

‘It is not the norm for a contestant to enter the competition on consecutive years,’ explained a Miss Cayman Islands Committee spokesperson.

The committee’s chairperson, Ms Lynne Whittaker, added that Stacey-Ann Kelly, crowned Miss Cayman in April 2004, would normally have relinquished her crown last month. The reason why she has no successor as yet is because of the damage wrought by Ivan.

The Bodden Town beauty’s reign was extended last month while the committee holds preliminary meetings to look into dates and possibly an alternative venue to the Lions Centre.

‘We are aiming to hold the Miss Cayman Islands pageant during late summer, but we’ve no date as yet’, Ms Whittaker commented.

The Crewe Road venue, the traditional home of the annual show, is one of the few venues large enough to stage the popular event. Ms Whittaker said the pageant regularly attracts and audience of 2,000 to 4,000 people.

Mr. Howie Tipton, manager of the Lions Centre confirmed that major renovation and upgrade is planned for the venue. He added that the closing in of the venue and the addition of air-conditioning were also likely.

Stacey-Ann’s last overseas contest was the Miss Hawaiian Tropic International competition held in Las Vegas 28 April – 2 May.

The 26-year-old was awarded a trophy for Miss Congeniality. Ms Whittaker speaking on behalf of the Miss Cayman Islands Committee said, ‘The pageant organisers said that Stacey-Ann was a wonderful representative. We are very proud of the goodwill that she obviously spread for Cayman.’

Other major contests entered so far by the present Miss Cayman during her extended reign are Miss Universe 2004 (Ecuador) and last November’s Miss World competition held in China.
