Farmer continues giant fruit growing tradition

Local farmer Melbourne Watler of Lower Valley seems to have the green-fingered touch when it comes to watermelons.

His prime specimens of the fruit is something that has been experienced first hand by his daughter, Esme and more recently his granddaughter Hannah.

His two-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter is shown in one photograph posing beside a giant 50lb watermelon he recently harvested in his yard, while the other photo, printed in The Caymanian Compass newspaper in the early 1970s, depicts his daughter at 2 years old with a watermelon weighing a whopping 52lbs, grown by Mr. Watler at Big Cliff Land.

In both pictures, the fruits are almost as big as his daughter and granddaughter.

Mr. Walter, who has always been involved in farming, and is a prominent cattle raiser on the island, has grown many varieties of fruits and vegetables through the years., including limes, lemons, oranges, grapefruits, yellow and red tomatoes, all varieties of mangoes, peanuts, cashews, red and yellow watermelons, turnips, cantaloupes, radishes, yams, potatoes, cassava, honeydew melons, breadfruits, pumpkins, corn and squash.
