The Cayman Islands Flag Football Association kicked off an exciting league season on Saturday.
The games were well attended and the action fast and furious from the outset as defending champion Durty Reid’s Raiders (‘Durty Durty’) featured in the opening game vs. Maples Packers.
The first score of the day was thrown by Kevin Solomon to league superstar Leslie ‘MVP’ Harvey.
In a surprising move the ‘Durty Durty’ ran the ball effectively against the swarming Maples defense led by Shawn Pitterson and Jorge Padilla.
Raiders RB/LB Edison Jackson led the charge and ran the ball to the five-yard line before running the ball in for the second touchdown of the day.
Late in the second half WR Harvey illustrated why he is the most feared offensive weapon in the league by catching the ball in his own half beating two defenders and scampering 50 yards for the final score and an overall dominant display by the defending champs.
They say defense wins championships. On this showing, the Raiders are making all the right moves to defend their title. Final score: Durty Reid’s Raiders 20-Maples Packers 0
In the second game of the afternoon. the Davy Jones Locker Pirates displayed a ruthless streak by dismantling the Aqua Beach squad 32-0.
The Pirates were led by Carlo Ylagan who was ‘cool as the other side of the pillow’ and demonstrated both skill and poise as the leagues top-rated quarterback.
The Pirates offensive line, anchored by Andrew Wisdom, Alex ‘El Diablo’ Angel and Benji Bodden, ensured that their quarterback had all day to pick apart the Aqua Beach defense.
The Pirates demonstrated all the skills necessary to become this year’s league champs, proving why they should be considered the league’s top-rated offense.
In the third game, Coconut Joe’s outclassed Daily Grind 18-0.
The med students from Coconut Joe’s are the find of the first week and will cause a few upsets before the end of the league campaign. They play a fluid game of flag football and are able to beat teams either by running the option or throwing the deep ball. They have excellent a supporters and are a welcome addition to the league.
The Daily Grind Shakers were disappointing in their opening performance of the season.
They must address key areas in their game plan and make necessary adjustments. If they don’t take drastic steps it may prove a long season.
In the game of the week, the West Bay Hell Cats squeezed by Cingular 12-7.
Cingular entered the game as heavy underdogs, but showed enough heart and skill to put many teams on notice.
They were led by quarterback Arthur Bogle and LB Phil Hinds, who showed gritty determination not be intimated by the menacing Hell Cats defense.
Hell Cats’ DB Philip ‘Pac Man’ Brown was a constant threat off the corner position as he blitzed his opponents at will causing much disruption and depriving Cingular of any offensive rhythm.
Cingular QB Bogle manged to connect with WR Nigel Solomon on a 40-yard bomb that deserves a ‘play of the year’ nomination, setting up the tense finish.
For the Hell Cats, QB Doss Solomon performed efficiently filling in for QB Jacob ‘Frecko’ Ebanks.
The game was a tightly contested battle that had fans ebbing and flowing with anticipation as the game neared the end.
The outcome was decided late in the game due to pressure caused by DE Jamal ‘D’Bo’ Young, who saw limited action, but made the most of his opportunity by forcing the Cingular QB into an ill advised pass, intended for Cingular WR Colin Anglin, that was intercepted by Hell Cats FS Jorge Ebanks.
League action resumes this week at the Outpost Rd Triple C field.
Can the med students of Coconut Joe’s upset Durty Reid’s?
In the game of the week, can Cingular steal a one against the Westel Giants led by Rusty ‘Golden Boy’ Smith, Dan ‘Scooter’ Allard and Dean ‘QB sub supreme’ McIntosh, who has a winning record when asked to lead the Giants?
